What is Palo Santo?
The Palo Santo (which means “sacred wood” in Spanish) means “holy staff”. It comes from a tree of the Zygophyllaceae family:
the Bulnesia Sarmientoi
. It would also have been called “quebrancho” by the Spanish colonists due to the fact that its hardness broke the axes during slaughter. With a height of about 18 meters, it is a medium tree with small leaves and many branches with capsule-shaped fruits of dark green color. This tree lives in the South American regions of Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Mato Grosso in Brazil.
During the combustion of its bark, it gives off a fragrant smoke that would have, according to some beliefs, many purifying virtues.
The origin of the use of palo santo is very old. It was used by Inca shamans during religious and spiritual rituals, as a tool to attract good luck and ward off any signs of negativity, and as a way to get better spiritual communication with their gods. This tree is also present in the rituals of indigenous weddings: the couple must plant a shoot of this tree in the absence of witnesses in order to link their destinies and that their union lasts forever. Its essence was used to treat skin and muscle problems; Soot from this wood was used to treat external wounds, and bark decoctions were used to treat stomach problems.
