The Jamini House
The French-Indian brand Jamini mixes rare wool and silk raw materials with elegant cottons and recycled papers to create a range of bohemian chic linen. The brand’s creator, Usha Bora, hails from the Assam region of eastern India. Jamini is committed to safeguarding ancestral know-how and accompanying women in their emancipation by working with small groups of women weavers in different villages in the region. The brand combines Indian traditions with a chic and bold French style.
The Jamini brand gets its name from the purple color of lotus flower petals in Hindi, which are abundant in Assam, the home region of designer Usha Bora. The brand aims to bring together a community of customers sharing common values of preserving a contemporary Indian heritage, with the ambition to become an international reference brand thanks to its chic and bold style. In India, color is not only aesthetic but punctuates every moment and event of life.
Who is Usha Bora?
Usha Bora, the creator of Jamini, is an energetic and curious woman, driven by love. Originally from the Assam region of India, she considers herself a “daughter of the earth” who grew up surrounded by majestic animals such as rhinos and elephants. She leaves her native land to discover another world, determined to emancipate herself while remaining attached to her roots. Usha is convinced that she can use her creative talent to harmoniously combine Indian and French cultures, respecting the times and striving for excellence. She is committed with passion and determination to the Jamini adventure, which allows her to express her sincere and sensible commitment to global human and ecological issues.
What is the block print technique?
Jamini uses a traditional printing technique called “block print” to create its cushion covers, quilts, carpets and bags. This technique originated in India and dates back more than a thousand years. It was rediscovered in Europe in the sixteenth century and has experienced a resurgence in popularity since the 60s and 70s. Today, the main woodblock printing center is located in Sanganer, a suburb of Jaipur, India. The creator of the brand, Usha Bora, attaches great importance to local craftsmanship and the authenticity of its products.
Where do these floral motifs come from?
Flowers have always been a source of inspiration for Indian artisans, influencing paintings, weaving, sculptures and prints. The Mughal rulers, who ruled India from the 16th to the 18th century, needed expert craftsmen to build their mausoleums and mosques. Flowers played an important role in the decoration of these buildings, creating a fusion between Mughal and Hindu art movements that testify to the beauty of collaboration and shared vision. India is a country where diverse cultural influences converge, such as Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Persian and Christian influences.
